Through the project Co-operating Out Of Poverty, the Torchbearer Foundation joins in the Global Co-operative Campaign Against Poverty, initiated by the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) in February 2004 to encourage communities Co-operate Out Of Poverty. This project will also contribute to meeting the Millennium Development goals by cutting across the multi-dimensions of poverty -eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, ensure environmental sustainability, combat HIV/AIDS & malaria and other diseases.

This project is being pilot-tested in Ndu Sub-Division, Donga-Mantung Division of the North-West Province of Cameroon by Rene Njamnshi (Project Director & and Torchbearer Christian Community Development Director for Ndu Sub-Division), student of a special project-based MSc. in International Community Economic Development at the Southern New Hampshire University, USA. One offspring of this project is the Torchbearer CO-OP, a co-operative promoting programme. As of May 31, 2007, 57 pre-cooperatives have been formed and are fully operational in 16 out of 17 villages of Ndu Sub-Division. Group membership (pre-coops) is for the moment primarily made up of Torchbearer Christian Community Development prayer cells (Torches). Semi-pilots of the programme are expected to start in Nkambe, Bum and other sub-divisions soon.
