

Through the project
Co-operating
Out Of Poverty, the Torchbearer Foundation
joins in the Global Co-operative Campaign Against Poverty,
initiated by the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) and
the International Labour Organization (ILO) in February 2004 to
encourage communities Co-operate
Out Of Poverty. This project will also
contribute to meeting the Millennium Development goals by
cutting across the multi-dimensions of poverty -eradicate
extreme poverty and hunger, ensure environmental sustainability,
combat HIV/AIDS & malaria and other diseases.
The poorest family in Ndu Sub-Division is reminded of its
poverty when
,
it goes for one day without palm oil 



This project is being pilot-tested
in Ndu Sub-Division, Donga-Mantung Division of the North-West
Province of Cameroon by Rene Njamnshi (Project Director & and
Torchbearer Christian Community Development Director for Ndu
Sub-Division), student of a special project-based MSc. in
International Community Economic Development at the Southern New
Hampshire University, USA. One offspring of this project is the
Torchbearer CO-OP, a co-operative promoting programme. As of May
31, 2007, 57 pre-cooperatives have been formed and
are fully operational in 16 out of 17 villages of Ndu Sub-Division.
Group membership (pre-coops) is for the moment primarily made up
of Torchbearer
Christian Community Development prayer cells (Torches).
Semi-pilots of the programme are expected to start in Nkambe,
Bum and other sub-divisions soon.
