Torchbearer Computer Technology Institutes (CTIs), is an ambitious project of the Torchbearer Foundation – Cameroon. Realizing the vital role information and communication technology can play in poverty reduction and community development led to the conception of Torchbearer CTIs. Torchbearer CTI project now has four project sites -Nkambe, Fundong, Belo and Ndu.

Torchbearer CTIs’ major aim is to reduce computer illiteracy in Cameroon especially in the rural areas where computers and ICTs are still a foreign concept to most people. The Torchbearer CTIs is thus "bringing ICTs to people potentially at risk of exclusion or discrimination in the emerging knowledge society" (Digital Word Foundation). While children and youth in most urban areas are increasingly getting exposure to computers and ICT, the majority of Cameroonian children and youths in rural areas are not. The general debate in Cameroon like in most other countries has focused on the digital gap between countries of the north and those of the South. This is one of the major reasons why the Torchbearer Foundation is organizing CTIs in Cameroon with emphasis on rural areas. Special focus is on the youths – youths, computers and ICT for sustainable development. Enhancing the use of new information and communication technology by youths as a tool for poverty alleviation will go a long way in meeting the Millennium Development Goals.

General objectives of the Torchbearer Computer Technology Institutes include:

  • To fight computer and ICT illiteracy in Cameroon thereby reducing the digital gap.

  • Provide fast and reliable internet/documentation/training and net-phone services at affordable prices.

  • Provide intellectual and professional training services in computer-based professions at affordable prices, especially to  youths.

  • Create an attractive working/learning environment that favours the communication of the love of Jesus Christ and reveals the glory of God.

  •  Fight against poverty and unemployment.

  •  Generate financial resources to support Torchbearer Christian Community Development ministries.

Enhancing the use of new information and communication technology by youths as a tool for poverty alleviation will go a long way in meeting the Millennium Development Goals. The pioneer of such projects is the Torchbearer Computer Technology Institute (CTI) Nkambe. Three new project sites have been established in Fundong, Belo and Ndu.
